Run Dolomites: Val Falcina Loop

A 3 mile loop perfect for running or hiking that begins at Lago del Mis then follows the Val Falcina Nature Trail.

Starting Point

This loop starts and finishes at the Parco del Mis Refreshment Area. There is a large car park here which can be found on google maps by searching 'SP2 Loc. Pian Falcina, 32027 Sospirolo BL Italy'.

There's a beach area so after the run there is the opportunity for a lake swim and there is also a cafe selling refreshments. The beach and cafe can become busy on a hot day, but the running route remains relatively quiet.

Details for this route can be found here and you can download the GPX file to follow the route directly from your watch. This route is all on well-marked trails, some of which are narrow in places. Trail shoes are advisable as there are some steep inclines on the route.

Mile 1

The first mile is probably one of the toughest as there is a steep ascent. From Lago del Mis head back away from the lake through the recreational area. Behind the cafe you will see that there is a trail marked Val Falcina heading off towards the right. Follow this trail as it climbs quickly up into the trees.

The first half mile has the most elevation, the trail will then slightly flatten and become undulating for the next half mile. The trail is really easy to follow and there will be intermittent signposts as above. On your left hand side down below will be a river that runs into Lago del Mis and you may catch some stunning glimpses of the lake behind you.

Mile 2

The second mile continues along the trail away from Lago del Mis. About half a mile in you will reach a point where you descend down to the water and cross over some rocks to reach the trail on the other side. These rocks are easy to cross and there are some lovely views looking down the valley.

Once on the other side the trail then heads back towards Lago del Mis but on the other side of the valley with the water now down below on the left-hand side.

Mile 3

The last mile is probably the prettiest section of the route. It's also the easiest as this part of the route heads downhill. Continue following the trail back towards Lago del Mis. The trail will end at a road, turn left here and you will be back at the starting point for this loop.

This is a really enjoyable short well-marked loop. The distance isn't far but the trails are steep, especially at the start, and therefore the loop is quite challenging if you are running it. The course has a total elevation of 715ft and the elevation profile is below:
